Despite the mandatory helmet law in the Philippines, I still see many motorcycle drivers and back-riders not wearing helmets when traveling along C5 road and EDSA. Ang tigas talaga ng ulo ng mga Pinoy kung minsan, ano? Tsk.
The Mandatory Helmet Act of 2010 (Republic Act 10054) was authored by Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr. This law aims to protect motorcycle drivers, back-riders, as well as pedestrians from injuries and death in accidents. But how come there are still many people who are not compliant with this very simple, practical law even if it's for their own good?
What could possibly be the reason behind this? Walang pambili ng Shoei helmets? C'mon, there must be something cheaper out there.
Under this law, those who will be caught not wearing protective helmets will have to pay a minimum fine of P1,500 and a maximum penalty of P10,000. Now, since maraming ayaw sumunod, can we raise the fine to 100,000 instead? :-(
